Allergy Free Eating

A Food allergy and food intolerances are not the same. Food allergies can lead to dangerous and dramatic reactions, while food intolerances typically give you less severe, but more prolonged symptoms.

Food intolerances are caused by various chemicals occurring naturally in nature in a wide variety of plants and other foods. Also, the more commonly recognized additives, preservatives, colorings and flavoring’s which are added in food today.

Both these natural and artificial compounds can cause adverse reactions in sensitive people if consumed through the diet. The form of food intolerance can present with symptoms affecting the skin, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. The best recognized symptoms being:

Sinus, asthma, headaches, migraines, nasal congestion, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, depression, lethargy, low concentration, mental agitation and signs of a weak immune system.

A food allergy is an adverse immune response to a food protein. Food allergies are distinct from other adverse responses to food, such as food intolerance. In food allergies, a protein in the food can trigger off an allergic response. The most common food allergies being: dairy, egg, peanuts, treenuts, seafood, shellfish, soy and wheat.

Signs and symptoms of food allergies are: Tissue swelling, hives, itching of the throat, mouth and eyes and wheezing.

People can have food intolerances to lots of foods. When we eat a food we are intolerant to, for example gluten, it affects our immune system every single time we eat it. This causes your immune system to work all the time to clear out the unwanted immune response called antibodies. If you identify your food intolerances and amend your diet, you will automatically enhance the function of your digestive system, thus enhancing your immune system and general wellbeing.

There are specialised tests which can be easily performed to find out which foods you are sensitive to. To find out more about these tests and where they can be performed call Newstead Holistic Medicine on 3252 3228 or click on the link below.
